The sub-region is also home to high-tech and knowledge-based businesses including Amazon, Astra Zeneca, BAe Systems, easyJet, Insys (a leading UK defence company), Nissan European R & D Centre and Trafficmaster.

A burgeoning food and drink cluster is emerging around companies such as Honeytop (naan bread) and Sam Pan Foods (Chinese food products) with inward investment by Bernard Matthews for sandwich and pizza production. Meanwhile, GM’s IBC arm has continued van manufacture in Luton and has expanded volumes and productivity substantially in recent years by pursuit of advanced production techniques.
